The Rights of Man is the second solo recording of Boston Connemara man Colm Gannon. Eagerly awaited, these wonderful tracks take their place amongst the finest recordings of accordion music from the great Connemara tradition. Within this tradition particular importance is placed on rythm, taste, beauty and sweetness. This recording has all these qualities in abundance. This is no surprise as within this great tradition Colm has had a schooling of remarkable privilege. Learning at home from his father John and brother Sean and more widely influenced by other great exponents of this tradition, Colm has enthusiastically absorbed an understanding and discernment which he reflects perfectly.
Colm’s love and enthusiasm for music is not driven by pride or ego. On the contrary, Colm, by his very nature, is an extremely generous, supportive and encouraging person and is very much a sharer of his time and music. These personal qualities are reflected in Colm’s playing as well as his sheer and profound love of music. His optimism is both infectious and joyful and is palpable in his playing leaving the listener with a sense of joy and depth. Colm is an extremely skilful and gifted player and an exemplary technician. However, these outward facets never detract from the primary focus of his musical philosophy of depth, sweetness and beauty.
This latest recording is a continuation of musical reflection and movement of a true and honest musician, always seeking , always enthusiastic, always listening within the well of the tradition, and never stagnant or lazy. On this recording Colm is joined by Alec Finn and Johnny Ringo McDonagh along with John Blake whom, as expected, provide tasteful backing. Colm is also joined by Kelly Gannon, on concertina on a very memorable track.
Get ready to listen to this recording of the finest calibre. Highly influential, creative and hugely inspirational. éist agus bain sult as!
